Dr. Clay Austin - Pastor

Dr. Clay Austin

Clay is a native of Morristown, Tenessee. He grew up in First Baptist Church where he accepted Christ as his savior and was baptized. First Baptist played an important role in his formative years as Sunday School Teachers, Choir leaders, Church Training Teachers, and Youth leaders played a large role in his life.

In 1972, Clay was licensed to the ministry by First Baptist Morristown in the same service where his father was ordained as a deacon. The college years began at Walters State Community College where he was active in starting a Baptist Student Group, teaching Child Evangelism Fellowship Classes, and working with fifth graders at church. Following Walters State, Clay transferred to East Tennessee State University where he was again involved in Baptist Campus Ministry, preaching in local churches, and was a youth director at a Johnson City Church. He met his future wife, Anita, at the Baptist Center.

Clay and Anita were married on September 20, 1975 while Clay was a student at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Anita taught school during those years in the Jefferson County School System. Following seminary, Clay and Anita moved to Decatur, Georgia were he was the Associate Pastor of Heritage Hills Baptist Church. It was during those years that he experienced the call to the pastorate.

In February of 1982 Clay and Anita moved to Jonesborough, Tennessee to pastor Cherokee Baptist Church. Their first child, Amber, was born in April and Alison joined the family in 1984. In February of 1986, Clay was called as pastor of First Baptist Church of Blountville.

Clay completed his Doctor of Ministry work while at Blountville with his research and writing centering on worship.

In September of 2009, the Austin’s welcomed a son-in-law as Amber married Robbie Wagner. Amber and Robbie live in Indian Springs area and are a part of the First Baptist Church Blountville Family. They were blessed with Garrett Austin Wagner, born on July 20. 2011, and Aubrey Morgan Wagner, born on December 9, 2012.

On June 12, 2010, the Austin family welcomed a second son-in-law as Alison married Jonathan Smith to the family. They were blessed with Eli Jacob Smith on October 6, 2012 and are expecting their second child this August. They are a part of the church family at Christ's Fellowship Church.

The Austins have found Blountville to be a great place to live and have been blessed by serving God at First Baptist Church.

Rev. Adam Sells - Minister of Youth

Rev. Adam Sells

Adam came to be a part of the staff here at First Baptist Blountville in 2011. He was born, raised, and resides just down the road in Bristol Tennessee. His church years didn’t begin until the age of 11 when he was invited by his friend and her family to church. After attending for a short time he was invited by the same family to a Christian concert. It was on that night, October 22nd, 1992 that he came to know Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior.

Adam and his two brothers and one sister were raised by his hero, their mother. Even with much love and support from his mom he has very fond memories of his learning what it is to be a part of Gods family and be influenced by the love of the body of Christ. From his teenage years through his late twenties Adam was greatly influenced by his church family at Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church.

After high school Adam began college at East Tennessee State University with a goal of becoming an Athletic Trainer. In 2001 God revealed His plan for Adams life. In July of that year God called Adam to be a Preacher of the Gospel. The following year Adam became a part of the staff at his home church, Tennessee Avenue. In the following seven and a half years he was licensed and ordained into the ministry, graduated from East Tennessee State with a major in Sociology and was the Associate Pastor over Children and Youth at his church. Adam will forever be grateful for his years of ministry at Tennessee Avenue and the many Godly men and women who ministered to and with him there.

In May of 2001 Adam was married to his wife Angie who is originally from Glade Spring, Virginia. She is a graduate of King College in Bristol, Tennessee and works for The State of Virginia. Adam and Angie had their first child, Addison, in 2005. In 2008 another son joined the family with the birth of Andrew.

During his years of ministry Adam has been blessed to have been a part of many ministry opportunities. While working with children and youth he has had the privilege to work in the Awana ministry, Upward Basketball and Cheerleading, work at children’s camps, and take part in mission work both foreign and domestic. Adam has also had the honor of preaching at Rick Coram Ministries PowerLife Camp and is an Upward Awards Night Speaker. No matter the ministry or the place Adams heart’s desire is to honor God by “Loving Jesus and Loving People” because “Life is not worth Living but it is worth giving away”.

Rev. Jimmy Garrett - Minister of Children

Jimmy Garrett

Jimmy became a part of the staff in October of 2015. He was born and raised in Lindale, Georgia. Jimmy was raised in a God fearing household and attended church all of his life. At the age of 9 he gave his life to the Lord, but, as most children, didn't fully comprehend the depth that is a relationship with Jesus Christ.

At the age of 18, Jimmy became the Youth Pastor of his home church and served on the GA Youth Camp Board until he moved away for college. Jimmy attended the University of West Georgia where he studied Political Science and minored in History and Literature. During his college years and to this day Jimmy has served as a Counselor and now Recreations Director of PowerLife Youth Camps.

On August 6, 2011 Jimmy completely surrendered to Christ at a youth event in Florida where Rev. Adam Sells was preaching. He graduated college in May of 2012 and during that year he surrendered his life to full time ministry. Jimmy was already serving as Co-coordinator of Children Ministry at Midway Macedonia Baptist Church in Villa Rica, Georgia at that time. In the Summer of 2012 Jimmy accepted a position with the North American Mission Board as a Church Plant Intern. In September of 2012, Jimmy moved to Delaware to help plant LifeHouse Church in Middletown. He served 2 years with the church and the North American Mission Board as an Associate Pastor and Church Plant Intern.

During the summer of 2014, Jimmy felt the Holy Spirit stirring again and in October of 2014, he moved to the Tri-Cities area where he attended our church for 1 year. During that year, he served here at the church in numerous different aspects before becoming our Minister of Children. Now, he has the opportunity to serve our church and community through First Kids, the Awana Ministry, Camp Discovery and all the Children's Events we have throughout the year!

Jimmy's only desire is for children and their families to grow closer to Christ and for children to be allowed the environment where they can learn God's Word on their levels of understanding. "When you take a child by the hand, you take a parent by the heart" and "when you reach a child you change a life, when you reach a parent you change an entire family" (Hudson, Unknown).
